When I got to college, most of what was being taught in my English classes were things that I had learned in Wordsmiths. The program made me much more critical of my writing, and it’s helped me with my grades. Other students notice how well I do with my writing, and they frequently ask me to check their papers for them. I’d recommend Wordsmiths to anyone wanting to prepare themselves for college.

Creative writing paves the way to original thinking, self-confidence, and academic success. Wordsmiths helps prepare Birmingham’s brightest city students for college…and for college scholarships.

The program gives 8th- through 12th-grade students the chance to work with professional writers and develop their own distinctive voices. They’ll jumpstart their imaginations as they fine-tune their language skills.

After participating in the program, students can expect:

To write more clearly, concisely, and with a style of their own.

To enter their work in writing contests and to be published in the Wordsmiths class magazine.

Concentrated help with standardized test preparation, college essays, and scholarship applications.

A $1,000 college scholarship for each year of Wordsmiths they complete, with the potential for up to $5,000 in total scholarship money.

In the most recent year of Wordsmiths classes, nine students placed in state and national contests.
